Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor is desperate for captain Fabricio Coloccini to stay at the club.

The Argentine asked for a transfer in January but was persuaded to stay to aid the club’s battle against relegation.

Manager Alan Pardew wants to retain the centre-back’s services for at least one more season and Taylor said the players are eager for him to remain at St James’ Park.

“The lads love playing with him and we hope he stays,” Taylor told The Shields Gazette.

“He’s a very quiet guy, but when he speaks, he speaks very well.

“Colo (Coloccini) and I have had a great partnership over the past few seasons. We have a good understanding. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We seem to be able to mix it up.

“He’s very composed and he’s not shy of a tackle as well. He’s been great in training. You can learn a lot from him.

“I’ve got a fantastic partnership with him and hopefully that will continue.”
