Toronto FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei will train with Liverpool for a week, the club’s boss Aron Winter said.

Frei, who has never been capped at senior level for Switzerland, has established himself as one of the top keepers in the MLS in recent years.

He will fly to England and train with the first team squad at Melwood until December 18 in a similar arrangement to the one which recently brought New York Red Bulls striker Juan Agudelo to Merseyside for a brief spell.

Former Ajax and Inter midfielder Winter, now Frei’s boss at Toronto, believes his goalkeeper can only benefit from training with a host of Premier League stars.

“This is a great opportunity for Stefan and we were happy to give him permission to train with a historic club like Liverpool,” Winter told the club’s website.

“He has emerged as one of the top keepers in the league since the start of his career and has certainly earned this special opportunity.”
