Roma have confirmed Francesco Totti will miss Sunday’s derby against Lazio after he failed to recover from a thigh strain.

Totti picked up the injury in Roma’s 3-1 win over Atalanta last time out after suffering a heavy blow to his thigh.

The Italian has been unable to train since then and he needs further treatment, meaning he will be unavailable for the big game.

A statement released by Roma read: “Francesco Totti will continue his rehabilitation following further scans which took place at Trigoria on Tuesday.”

“He will continue physiotherapy treatment and will have another scan next week to evaluate his progress.”

There had been slim hopes of Totti’s making the bench for Sunday’s game, but it is now more likely he will be ready to return against Palermo the following week.

Roma sit sixth in Serie A after seven games this campaign, with only goal difference keeping them above Lazio.
