Cruzeiro defender Mauricio Victorino has escaped serious injury after being in a car accident in Belo Horizonte.

Triunfo has reported a car driven by the 29-year-old centre-back collided with two vehicles on Avenida Virgen del Carmen while driving in the city on Tuesday.

He was taken to a local hospital with contusions to his neck and back.

Cruzeiro doctor Sergio Freire Junior confirmed that Victorino’s condition was positive when examined.

“He came to hospital with pains in his neck and back, but tests showed that he has nothing serious,” Freire Junior told Globoesporte, adding the player was very unlikely to participate in training on Wednesday.

“It would be very difficult for him to come into training, since the player is in a lot of pain. We will only clear him to play once the pain passes.”

An 82-year-old woman was also involved in the collision and taken to the same medical centre where Victorino received treatment.

Victorino helped Uruguay to victory at the 2011 Copa America, and also appeared in the team’s run to the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
