Vogel targeting Bayern scalp

Basel coach Heiko Vogel says he is unconcerned by Bayern Munich’s ominous form heading into their Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Vogel’s side won the first leg of their round-of-16 meeting with Bayern 1-0 at home, and face the daunting return fixture at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern side posted a 7-1 rout of Hoffenheim at the venue on Saturday, powered by a Mario Gomez hat-trick and a brace from Arjen Robben.

But Vogel is unconcerned by that scoreline, and is confident his men can score away from home.

“We always go for goals,” Vogel told Bild. “If we lose 1-2, we still reach the quarter-finals. And we’ve scored in every Champions League game this season.”

“Quite clearly, it’s an unusual result (7-1 against Hoffenheim). But the margin of victory does not impress me. I have absolutely no fear that Bayern will score seven goals in one game.”

The former Bayern youth coach conceded his side were underdogs for the tie, but said they were very confident of progressing to the next round.

“We know that Bayern will come out a lot more attacking tomorrow than they did in the first leg. So it’s very important that we are ready from the start of the game and we shouldn’t hide.”

“In my opinion, we have enough players in his side who could grab a score of nowhere, and every time that we score, it will become more difficult for Bayern.”

“It is not a battle between equals, it is a duel between David and Goliath. And Goliath was supposed to win.”

“We know we are not hopeless. And we are a very, very self-confident David.”
