West Ham striker Andy Carroll says confidence among the squad is “sky high” after they extended their unbeaten run to five matches.

Goals from Matt Jarvis and Kevin Nolan gave the Londoners a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday, a result that lifted them to 10th in the Premier League table.

Sam Allardyce’s men have drawn with Liverpool and Manchester United during their impressive run of form, while they also beat high-flying West Bromwich Albion 3-1.

Carroll has starred in recent weeks, scoring three times, and he was delighted after being named West Ham’s player of the month on the back of his efforts.

“It’s obviously great, I’ve been working hard this month and I’ve got the award to show for it,” Carroll told the club’s official website.

“I just needed to keep myself fit and performances would start coming, as they have been. I’ve been scoring goals and creating goals and it has been a great month.

“All the lads have worked hard, got the results and we’re on a good run at the minute. Confidence is sky high at the minute and it showed again against Wigan.

“We’re more or less safe and we just want to get into the top half. We’re pushing on really strong to get that position.”

West Ham have conceded just four goals in their last five outings thanks to some outstanding performances from veteran goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen and Carroll sang the praises of the former Bolton man as West Ham prepare for a trip to Manchester City on Saturday.

“The defence has been great,” he said. “Jussi has kept us in a lot of games in the last couple of months. He has made some tremendous saves and there were another couple on Saturday that kept them from scoring.

“The defence worked really well [against Wigan] and it showed with the clean sheet.”
