Wolves caretaker calls for patience

Wolves caretaker boss Terry Connor believes the club’s board needs to be given time to appoint a new full-time manager.

Mick McCarthy was sacked earlier this month after his struggling side were handed a 5-1 thrashing by local rivals West Bromwich Albion.

Several managers have reportedly turned down offers from the English Premier League club, with Connor to take charge for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United.

Connor, who was McCarthy’s assistant for five-and-a-half years at the Molineux, said the club should be afforded time to ensure they appointed the right person for the job.

“They have to make the right appointment. It has to be right. Having had what’s gone on last week, the next appointment I think is crucial – whether it’s for 13 games or whether it’s for the next 13 years,” he said on Thursday.

“And I think you have to give them the benefit of taking that time and finding the right candidate to do the job, whether it’s a short-term or a longer-term project.”

Wolves are in the relegation zone but are level on points with fellow strugglers Blackburn and Queens Park Rangers.

Connor said he had made a few minor changes ahead of the visit to St James’ Park, but added it will be difficult to turn his team’s fortunes around immediately.

“They’re the same players so you prepare the same way. I’ve tweaked it a little bit, brought one or two ideas which I hope will be fresh and get them stimulated,” Connor said.

“But there’s no magic wand that you can wave over a group of players and suddenly transform them in a week so it’s been back to basics to be honest.”
