Advocaat: Draw a ´good result´

Russia boss Dick Advocaat was pleased with his team’s 1-1 draw with Poland but suggested changes could be made in defence.

Advocaat’s team dominated for large parts of the first half but were unable to sustain the pressure after Alan Dzagoev’s third goal of the tournament, with Jakub Blaszczykowski’s brilliant strike levelling it for Poland.

The draw means Russia require at most a point in their last game against Greece to make it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 with Advocaat hinting changes may be made in defence.

“In general, I’d say the draw is a good result for us,” Advocaat said.

“Poland played very well tonight, under the risk of losing the chance to win a place in the last eight if they lost.

“Meanwhile, we allowed them to create too many chances in attack. That means we still need to strengthen our defence.

“We also played well and scored before the break and had many chances in the second half, but we missed them all.”

When asked which team he felt had impressed the most in the early stages of the tournament, Advocaat was not shy in naming Russia.

“It has been Russia in terms of football, the way we play.

“Our first game was 4-1 win (against Czech Republic), and then this second game was like an away game, and there was this beautiful equaliser (from Poland).

“Both teams worked very hard. Russia had more possession, and playing away it was very hard.”
