AZ Alkmaar have signed 21-year-old defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw from Heerenveen on a five-year deal.

Gouweleeuw, who is an Under-21 international for the Netherlands, has been a first-team regular for Heerenveen throughout the last two Eredivisie seasons after making his debut in 2011.

The centre-back also has experience in Europe, making four appearances for Heerenveen in the UEFA Europa League this season.

Gouweleeuw, who moved for an undisclosed fee, was delighted to seal his switch to AZ and said he was ready for a change.

“It took a long time…I was ready for a new step in a new environment,” Gouweleeuw said on the club’s official website.

“Here they want attacking football and pressure…I think that’s good at suiting my game.”

AZ’s football affairs director Earnest Stewart believes Gouweleeuw will fit perfectly into the club’s style of play.

“It was no secret that Jeffrey Gouweleeuw had long been on our wish list,” Stewart said.

“In AZ we love defenders who risk their possession (and) dare to (go forward). There will be more football in the squad.

“We see great potential in Jeffrey. At AZ he can make the next steps towards the top.”
