According to the Daily Mirror, David Beckham is likely to lose his place in the England team for the World Cup qualifier tomorrow in Andorra.
It has always been possible that David Bentley could force his way in to the side in his place, but the Mirror claim that the position will be filled by Arsenal’s young striker or winger Theo Walcott.
There is no doubt that Walcott still has tremendous potential, but he is still not a regular at Arsenal and Arsene Wenger, who is a pretty good judge, sees him as a striker and not as a wide player.
It will be interesting to see if the Mirror is right. In some ways it would be a forward step as Walcott is clearly more of the future of England than Beckham is, but in many others it looks like a desperation move.
If Capello believes Walcott is the answer, why didn’t he play in the friendlies?
