Marcelo Bielsa has signed a one-year contract extension as head coach of Athletic Bilbao.
The Argentine trainer led the Basque side to the finals of both the Europa League and the Copa del Rey in 2011-12, and has been applauded for bring an exciting and attacking brand of football to San Mames.
Despite uncertainty over the 56-year-old’s future and reports linking him with the vacant Chelsea post, Bilbao have announced that the Rosario-born trainer will stay with the club for another campaign.
“Athletic Club and coach Marcelo Bielsa have agreed to extend the contractual relationship that unite both parties until June 30, 2013,” a statement on the La Liga club’s official website reads.
Bilbao ended up in 10th place in La Liga last term after a dip in form towards the end of the season, but will be buoyed on by Bielsa’s commitment to the club.
