Title hopefuls Atletico Mineiro lost ground to league leaders Fluminense after they were beaten at Internacional in the Brazil Serie A.
Following Fluminense’s 2-0 win over Bahia, Mineiro needed a victory to cut the gap back to six points but Alexi Stival’s men suffered a 3-0 loss against sixth-placed Internacional on Wednesday.
Defender Jackson Souza opened the scoring with his first goal for Internacional on 66 minutes before Fred doubled their advantage 14 minutes later.
Cassiano put the result beyond doubt three minutes from time.
Corinthians, meanwhile, climbed up to seventh following their come-from-behind 3-2 triumph at home to Flamengo.
Flamengo hit the front through Renato Santos on the half-hour mark but Edenilson levelled the match with 30 minutes left.
Paulo Andre put the hosts ahead after 75 minutes and Qatari striker Emerson Sheik seemingly wrapped up all three points in the 90th minute but Liedson ensured a nervy finish with Flamengo’s second goal three minutes into stoppage time.
Sao Paulo extended their unbeaten run in the Brazil Serie A to five games with a comfortable 2-0 win over Vasco da Gama.
Luis Fabiano and Osvaldo scored in each half as the six-time league champions moved to within a point of fourth-placed Vasco da Gama.
Botafogo’s dismal form continued on Wednesday after they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Santos.
Andre and Ezequiel Miralles both hit the target in the space of three minutes to leave Botafogo winless in six league games.
In other results, Ponte Preta overcame 10-man Nautico 2-1, Cruzeiro ran out 2-0 winners against Portuguesa and Figueirense bounced back from their 6-0 thumping at the hands of Mineiro with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over cellar dwellers Atletico Goianiense.
