Cellar-dwellers Greuther Fuerth are on the verge of relegation to Germany’s second tier following their 3-2 defeat to Hannover on Friday.

An 87th-minute winner from Sergio Pinto secured a rare away victory for ninth-placed Hannover and left Fuerth facing relegation.

A draw for 16th-placed Augsburg at home to Stuttgart on Saturday would condemn Mike Bueskens’ men to 2.Bundesliga football next season.

Both teams had opportunities to open the scoring but it was Hannover who hit the front courtesy of Mohammed Abdellaoue on 36 minutes.

However, Hannover’s lead lasted just five minutes as Serbian striker Nikola Djurdjic levelled proceedings four minutes before the half-time break.

The visitors restored their lead in the 71st minute, when Andre Hoffmann headed home a Konstantin Rausch corner.

Fuerth went in search of an equaliser and came close to getting back on level terms and they finally made the breakthrough thanks to Djurdjic with seven minutes remaining.

But just as Fuerth appeared to have earned a point, Pinto broke the hearts of the home faithful three minutes later, side-footing his effort past goalkeeper Wolfgang Hesl for Hannover’s fourth league win on the road this season.
