Edinson Cavani believes Uruguay can still qualify for the FIFA World Cup ahead of Tuesday’s crucial match against Venezuela.
Uruguay – who finished fourth at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Germany and won the Copa America one year later – have struggled in their bid to qualify for the 2014 competition in Brazil.
Only the top four teams progress from South American qualifying and Uruguay, who have 13 points from 11 matches, are seventh with three games remaining, meaning defeat to Venezuela could prove fatal.
Uruguay beat France 1-0 in a friendly last week but have not won in their last six World Cup qualifiers, leaving them in a perilous situation.
Napoli striker Cavani – who has been linked with Manchester City and Chelsea – feels his side have the quality to win the important fixture in Venezuela though.
“We want to qualify to the World Cup,” Cavani told OMNISPORT.
“For me, talking about players’ potential, Uruguay today is superior to other national teams in terms of value, as we have players that have demonstrated enough level on their clubs.
“So when getting them together for a play-off match, whether in a World Cup or any other competition, I think we are in a better position that many other national teams.”
Just four days after their World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, Uruguay’s FIFA Confederations Cup campaign will begin against Spain in Brazil.
Joining them in Group B will be Nigeria and Tahiti and Cavani said it is “privilege” for his side to be involved in the tournament.
“For us to be in the (Confederations) Cup is something that will us prestige because we earned the right to be there,” he said.
“We are Copa America champions…I think that when the group is solid with desire to work…we are going to do something to put our country as high as we can.”
“It is going to be a tough group because all of them are champions of their continent (laughs). We have the Africa champion and the European. The hopes are big (though).”
Cavani – who has scored 12 goals in 43 appearances for Uruguay’s senior team – is fresh off another excellent Serie A season.
He bagged 29 goals in 34 appearances for Napoli to comfortably finish as the league’s top scorer.
