Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh insists that he will be ready to step up should captain Robin van Persie depart Emirates Stadium.

The Moroccan’s Gunners career has stagnated, with few opportunities last season after a bright start following his move from Bordeaux in 2010.

With the 28-year-old the only recognised striker present on the club’s pre-season tour of the far east, he is determined to make a positive impression should the want-away club captain get his wish and force a transfer.

Chamakh told reporters: “If I am staying here with Arsenal I will do my best for the team and give the maximum.

“Last season was difficult. We were playing with just one striker. There was not a lot I could do.

“I was upset because I thought I could have played more. I hope this season I will play more than last.

“I have not spoken to the manager (Arsene Wenger) but I will soon. Yes, I need to be more confident. But to be more confident I need to play more. I am determined to stay.”
