Fabricio Coloccini admitted he is unsure of his future beyond the summer as speculation continues to mount he will look to leave Newcastle.
Coloccini has been a key figure in the Magpies’ revival since suffering relegation to the Championship in 2009, and was named club captain at the beginning of last season.
But in January, with Newcastle becoming embroiled in a relegation battle, the Argentine stunned his employers by asking permission to leave and return to his homeland, with San Lorenzo interested in acquiring him.
No agreement could be reached between the clubs and Coloccini was persuaded to remain until the summer following lengthy talks, but he has revealed he is thinking no further than that.
When questioned about the possibility of a summer move, he replied: “I don’t know. I don’t think anything about the end of the season because I just think about being alright.
“In five years in Newcastle, the people’s kindness and passion in the street and on the pitch is something unforgettable. It has marked me forever.
“But there are many things that make it difficult to be in England. I have been in Europe for 13 years. I have two children who can’t enjoy their grandparents and cousins because we are far from them.
“I talked with the club about rescinding the contract which links me to Newcastle for the next four to five years, so I could return to Argentina with my family and play for a club there.
“They said no, and I had to turn the page, get out onto the pitch and perform and try to thank them for the five years they have given me confidence and affection and made me feel at home.
“We also talked about May, when we will meet again. It was a frustrating and sad moment, but I understood and, as captain, I am helping to try and keep them up.”
St James’ Park witnessed an influx of French arrivals in January, and the reinforcements have made an immediate impact as Newcastle recorded back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Alan Pardew’s men now sit four points above the relegation zone as the Europa League resumes, with the Magpies entertaining Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday, but Coloccini is confident the squad are now well-equipped to enjoy success on multiple fronts.
“We have to keep going the way we did against Aston Villa, a team fighting with us at the bottom, and Chelsea, a team fighting at the top,” he added.
“A bunch of good new players have arrived with positive things for the team. Now we are bigger and also still in the Europa League, but I think we can cope with these fixtures.”
