Holders Borussia Dortmund hammered Hannover 5-1 to extend their defence of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday, as Bayer Leverkusen lost.
A hat-trick from Mario Goetze, together with goals from Polish duo Jakub Blaszczykowski and Robert Lewandowski, sealed a comfortable triumph for hosts Dortmund in the third-round match at the Westfalenstadion.
Mame Biram Diouf notched a consolation effort for Hannover on 79 minutes.
Elsewhere, Wolfsburg came from behind to beat Leverkusen 2-1 at home through goals from Christian Trasch and Bas Dost, the latter netting to win the tie in the 90th minute after a Fagner own-goal had given the visitors the lead.
Christian Gentner’s goal and a Vedad Ibisevic penalty in the space of four first-half minutes were enough for Stuttgart to see off Cologne 2-1, Christian Clemens’ late strike not enough for the away team to find a way back into the contest.
Finally, Bochum dispatched 1860 Munich 3-0 at home in a match between two second-tier teams.
Zlatko Dedic gave Bochum the lead on the half-hour mark, three minutes after the visitors were reduced to 10 men with the sending off of Guillermo Juan Vallori.
Marcel Maltritz rammed home Bochum’s advantage with a three-minute break late in the second half.
