Ecuador’s under-20 side are yet to win at the Sudamericano 2013 event in Argentina, with the football gods not watching over them so far.
Sitting bottom of Group B, the Ecuadorians have just one point from two matches, however that all could have been different had a stunning strike from Jose Cevallos in their 1-1 draw with Brazil.
With his side leading courtesy of a Miguel Parrales strike on 29 minutes, Cevallos gained possession five minutes later in his own half.
After letting the ball roll onto his boot from just inside Brazil’s half, Cevallos – who plies his club trade with Liga de Quito – unleashed a curling shot over goalkeeper Luis Gustavo.
But with the custodian beaten in flight, Cevallos’ shot thumped into the left upright, and bounced away to safety.
And typifying Ecuador’s fortune in the tournament – they have since lost to Venezuela – they were held by Brazil, by means of an own goal just moments after Cevallos’ near miss.
