Embattled linebacker IK Enemkpali is desperate to repay the faith shown in him by the Buffalo Bills after punching former team-mate Geno Smith.
The Jets released Enemkpali on Tuesday for breaking Smith’s jaw but the Bills claimed the 24-year-old off waivers just a day later.
There were doubts as to whether Enemkpali would be able to find another home in the NFL.
However, Enemkpali passed his Bills physical on Thursday and he is ready to link up with Ryan, former of the Jets, who drafted the linebacker in 2014.
“I’m just very grateful for Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills organization for giving me an opportunity to further my career here in 2015,” Enemkpali said.
“I’m very grateful and thankful and happy to be a Bill. I look forward to being a good team-mate, accountable player and accountable team-mate to this organization.”
A remorseful Enemkpali also issued an apology via a statement on Thursday as he faces a possible fine or suspension for punching Smith.
Enemkpali and Smith reportedly got into an argument over a $600 debt and things escalated.
Smith appeared to be “smug” over Enemkpali’s demand that Smith pay what was believed to be owed. That is when Enemkpali punched Smith, who will miss up to 10 weeks.
“I apologize for what happened,” he said.
“It should have never happened.
“I should have walked away from the situation. It was never my intention to hurt anybody.”
