Doncaster scored a sensational injury-time winner at Brentford through James Coppinger to end Saturday as League One champions.
After a tense game in west London, Dean Furman brought down Toumani Diagouraga to give away a penalty in injury time however Brentford’s Marcello Trotta could only hit the crossbar and Coppinger raced down the other end to score and leave the away fans in promotion ecstasy.
Bournemouth will join Doncaster in the Championship next season after finishing the season in second on 83 points, despite a 0-0 draw for Eddie Howe’s side at Tranmere who finished in mid-table. The South Coast club had already secured promotion ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.
Brentford will now face Swindon Town in the first play-off semi-final, after the West Country side were on course for a late win at Scunthorpe thanks to James Collins only for Scunthorpe to score three last-gasp goals in a 3-1 victory that could not prevent them from being relegated to League Two.
Yeovil Town will have to take on the might of Sheffield United in the other play-off after they fell to a 3-2 defeat at relegated Bury that ensured the hosts left League One for the division below with their heads held high.
Danny Wilson’s side could only manage a goalless draw with Preston at Bramall Lane, nevertheless they secured the remaining play-off place leaving Leyton Orient, who could only eke out a 1-1 home draw against Oldham, frustratingly in seventh and set for another season in League One.
Colchester did all that was asked of them in their bid to escape relegation at Carlisle United with a comfortable 2-0 victory thanks to second-half goals from Gavin Massey and Tom Eastman that left them safe in 20th spot.
In the remaining games, Jamie Proctor salvaged a 2-2 home draw for Crawley Town after Andy Monkhouse thought he had given Hartlepool a final-day victory with two second-half goals.
Crewe fielded an historic all-academy starting XI at Gresty Road and they rewarded their loyal fans with a 2-0 win over Walsall, while Franck Moussa grabbed a 2-2 draw for Coventry with a late equaliser at Notts County.
Shrewsbury raced into a 3-0 lead at home against relegated Portsmouth but needed to hang on at the end for a 3-2 victory – Patrick Bamford and Ryan Lowe scoring for MK Dons in the final game at Stevenage that left the visitors just short of a playoff place.
