Euro 2012: Lahm eyeing Robben duel

Bayern Munich team-mates Phillip Lahm and Arjen Robben will face each other on Wednesday, 13 June, when Germany and Holland battle for Group B supremacy at Euro 2012.

Group favorites Germany are fresh off a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal, while Holland were upset by Denmark in their first match in the Group of Death.

Now then, Phillip Lahm did very well to cope with Manchester United winger Nani in Germany’s Euro 2012 opener.

On the other side of the touchline, Arjen Robben struggled to regain his top form after a disappointing performance in the UEFA Champions League final against Chelsea.

There’s no doubt that Robben will need to be on scintillating form if the Dutch are to defeat Germany on Wednesday.

In short, he must get the better of his Bayern Munich team-mate Phillip Lahm, who is looking forward to the ‘duel’.

“I am looking forward to the duel,” Lahm told Sportbild. “As a player you always want to play the best and Arjen is one of the best around.

“He has the ability to beat anyone down both flanks with his speed and dribbling even when he’s known to cut inside.

“The Dutch cannot lose against us and in this game we will not be friends. Arjen will be especially motivated against us.”

Holland v Germany: Mind Games

What’s football without mind games?

Holland midfielder, and former Bayern Munich star, Mark van Bommel recently expressed his opinion regarding the German captaincy, claiming that Bastian Schweinsteiger would have been a better choice to captain Die DFB-Elf ahead of none other than Phillip Lahm.

The German skipper’s response was absolutely classic.

“That is his opinion which he has a right to voice,” said Lahm.

“Sometimes I find the timing of what people say very interesting.  Other than that I can only smile.”

Cheeky? I’d say so.
