Gago set for Argentina return

Spanish newspaper AS understands that Fernando Gago are closing in on a switch to Velez Sarsfield.

The two clubs appear to have reached an agreement over a five-month loan with an option to buy for €3.5 million.

Should the transfer go through, this will be a major coup for the Argentine giants, given that Gago are still regarded as one of world’s best holding midfielders.

The player has, however, became unsettled at Mestalla and requested permission to leave the club in the January transfer window.

Despite hinting that he would love to return to Boca Juniors, Gago looks set to join their arch rivals Velez.

The Argentina international only joined Valencia last summer, but numerous injuries prevented him from showing all he’s got at Mestalla.

As a result, he only made 13 La Liga appearances for the club, while he featured in 4 Champions League matches.
