Gillet match-fixing ban upheld

Jean-Francois Gillet had his 43-month ban for match-fixing upheld by a tribunal, the Italian football federation (FIGC) confirmed on Saturday.

The Torino goalkeeper was one of 20 player’s implicated for two matches relating to former club Bari in Serie B, in 2008 and 2009.

The 34-year-old will serve a ban of three years and seven months, and the charge of sporting fraud was also upheld.

Eleven other appeals were also rejected, including ex-Bari players Massimo Ganci and Gianluca Galasso.

Raffaele Bianco and Corrado Colombo had their bans reduced on appeal, the former will serve six months as opposed to the three years originally administered, while the latter had his sanction halved from six to three months.

Venezia defender William Pianu, who was originally cleared of match-fixing charges, has now been found guilty of sporting fraud by the tribunal on prosecution appeal. He has been suspended for three years and six months.

The players found guilty have the opportunity to lodge one final appeal to the national sports tribunal TNAS.
