Hertha consider leaving Berlin´s Olympic stadium

Hertha Berlin are considering quitting the German capital's Olympic Stadium – built by Hitler's architect Albert Speer – and moving to a new arena of their own, said a report here on Thursday.

The Berlin Morgenpost reports the Bundesliga club are looking at plans to build their own stadium with their lease on the Olympic Stadium set to expire in 2017.

“There are no firm plans, but we have the intention of looking at the feasibility of a few ideas,” said Hertha manager Dieter Hoeness.

Renting the Olympic Stadium costs Hertha 4.5 million euros per year (6.5 million US dollars).

“We are looking into the idea of a purpose-built football stadium in Berlin or the surrounding area,” Hoeness added.

Built under Hitler's orders and opened in 1936 to host the Berlin Olympic Games held later that year, the Olympic Stadium was renovated in 2004, at a cost of 282 million euros, to host the 2006 World Cup final.
