Hoffenheim close on Arsenal target

German media outlet Bild understands that Hoffenheim are stepping up their efforts to sign Swiss defender Fabian Schar from FC Basel.

Having conceded 52 goals in 32 Bundesliga fixtures, it is hardly surprising they are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements, and TSG now hope to lure the Switzerland international to Wirsol Rhein Neckar Arena.

Fabian Schar recently had his contract automatically extended for another year, meaning he is now tied to FC Basel until June 2016.

And with quite a few top sides showing interest in his signature, the Swiss giants are holding out for
€8 million.

The highly rated defender was linked with a move to Arsenal in the past, but Arsene Wenger all but ruled out reinforcing his back line in the summer.

Fabian Schar, 23, has been a regular for club and country over the last couple of years and has so far earned 16 Switzerland caps.
