Eddie Howe believes his Bournemouth side made good on a season’s worth of threat by thrashing Hull City 6-1 on Saturday.
Mike Phelan’s first game in permanent charge of the Tigers ran into a rampant Cherries display, with Charlie Daniels, Steve Cook, Junior Stanislas, Callum Wilson and Dan Gosling all on target at the Vitality Stadium.
Bournemouth’s third home Premier League win in succession lifts them into the top half of the table and Howe hailed his side’s greater efficiency in front of goal after they had hit the woodwork three times in a 2-2 draw at Watford before the international break.
Howe told Sky Sports: “We got the goals today that some of our attacking play has deserved and our season has deserved.
“Some of the games have been so tight this year and some I believe we’ve deserved to score more than we have done and we got our reward today.
“We were very, very clinical. There were a few moments early in the game where we got into some great positions and we didn’t pull the trigger but then when the chances came we finished them off superbly and it hasn’t always been the case this season.
“We gifted them the goal really but fair play to the players because at that moment the game could have swung either way but we put our foot down and went again and found the energy to win the game comfortably.”
Jack Wilshere once again failed to complete 90 minutes – his last full game came over two years ago for Arsenal.
“He’s improving all the time, he had a big bearing on the game today,” Howe said of the midfielder.
“He was behind a lot of our good football and he’s improving all the time.”
Hull head coach Phelan accepted fault for a woeful display from his side, claiming an attacking mindset was the root of their dismal defensive outing.
“I have to look at myself and improve,” Phelan said.
“I was happy with the selection. Possibly my naivety was to chase the game and open ourselves up.
“Maybe we should have been more disciplined and paid them more respect and we got punished.”
