Inter appoint Mazzarri, sack Stramaccioni

Inter have announced that Walter Mazzarri will become the club’s new manager, replacing the sacked Andrea Stramaccioni.

Mazzarri – who left Napoli at the season’s end – has signed a two-year deal at San Siro, where he will be tasked with improving the fortunes of Inter, who finished a disappointing ninth in Serie A this season.
The 51-year-old led Napoli to a second-placed finish in the Serie A in 2012-13, while he was also in charge for their Coppa Italia triumph last term.
Mazzarri was Napoli’s manager for four years, and has also enjoyed stints at Sampdoria, Reggina and Livorno during his coaching career.
A brief statement on Inter’s official website confirmed his appointment.
It read: “FC Internazionale would like to announce that the club has appointed Walter Mazzarri as the new head coach.
“FC Internazionale would like to thank Andrea Stramaccioni for the great commitment and professionalism he showed in a particularly difficult year.”
Stramaccioni was put in a tough position at Inter this season, with the departures of high-profile players Diego Forlan, Philippe Coutinho, Wesley Sneijder and Julio Cesar all leaving within a 12-month period, while his job was made harder by a lengthy injury list throughout the campaign.
The 37-year-old was promoted from his role with the club’s youth academy following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri in March 2012, and oversaw a run of just two defeats in the final nine games of that season.
But finishing ninth this season was not enough for Stramaccioni to keep his job, as he was dismissed by Inter president Massimo Moratti.
