Is it the end of the road for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal?

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is under-pressure after the clubs exit from the Capitol One at Fourth tier Bradford City.

With every passing season without a trophy more and more questions are asked about Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and his grip on the club.

It almost feels like déjà vu writing this article, because last season the same questions were being asked about whether Wenger could turn Arsenal’s season around.

Bailed out

Last season Arsenal were struggling badly, before Robin Van Persie hit top form and bailed the Gunners out. The Dutchman’s goals made sure that Wenger’s men finished in the top four, when it looked highly-unlikely.

However, this season Arsenal don’t have the goals of the prolific Van Persie to fall-back on. It doesn’t look like they currently have anybody capable of being that white knight this season. That must really worry Wenger and Gunners fans.

Legend

Without doubt Arsene Wenger is a managerial legend. He is one of the finest managers to ever grace a dugout in the English top flight. He brought new exciting ideas to England when he arrived in 1996.

Arsenal had a reputation for being a dull, but effective team prior to Wenger’s arrival on these shores. Within a few years Wenger had create an exciting, attacking team capable of not just winning, but winning in style.

This team continued to challenge for Premier League titles in various guises until 2005. That year is significant as it was the last year that the Gunners last won silverware.

Trophies

Arsenal fans throughout the history of the club have become accustomed to their team challenging for trophies and the big titles. However, it’s been well-documented that the Gunners have gone seven years without picking up silverware.

This has become a big bug-bear of Arsenal fans. The Gunners had a chance to progress to the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night against fourth tier Bradford. However the players produced a lacklustre display and went out of the competition courtesy of a penalty shootout defeat.

The League Cup maybe a much-maligned competition, but it was the Gunners chance to get the monkey of not winning a trophy for so long off their back. Instead they produced a tepid display.

League

If their performance in the league cup could be put-down as a one-off, some of their performances in the Premier League can’t be. The Gunners have produced some really poor displays in the top flight this season.

Even in their last Premier League game against West Brom the Gunners were lucky to be awarded two dubious penalty kicks. Without those decisions going their way they could be in the bottom half of the Premier League table now.

The question is can Arsenal recover their season like they did last season? I’m not so sure. Pundits have said that Arsenal will probably still finish in fourth place this season. Their two main competitors for that fourth Champions League spot Everton and Tottenham have been inconsistent in recent months.

However, I don’t think it will be that easy for Arsenal to hold off arch-rivals Tottenham or Everton. Both teams have the quality to go to any team in the top flight and pick up a result. Everton recently drew 1-1 with champions Manchester City and could quite easily have won at Eastland’s; they won’t be easily pushed aside.

Tottenham have already picked-up some good results this season, notably winning 3-2 at Manchester United’s Old Trafford. Andre Villas-Boas’ side cannot be written off either.

Staying

Arsenal haven’t won a trophy in seven years and don’t look any closer to challenging for the Premier League title in the near future. It’s a sad state of affairs for the Gunners, but I don’t think Arsene Wenger will be leaving the Emirates Stadium anytime soon.

Wenger is a club legend and I think it would be hard for the Gunners board to sack him. The Frenchman is also far too stubborn to quit as Gunners boss. That all adds up to Wenger staying until his contract expires.

People have talked about him moving upstairs, but I think that Wenger is too much of a big character to take a backseat at the club.

Enough

Under Arsene Wenger Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League for the last 15 years. That really is an incredible record. This season that run is again in doubt, with the likes of Tottenham and Everton big threats to the Gunners.

Arsenal could still finish in the top four of the Premier League, but as Gunners fans have stated finishing fourth is not good enough for a club with the history of Arsenal. Is it time for change at Arsenal? I think it maybe. Will there be change? I very much doubt it.

Mr wenger this is the rigth time for you to leave the club, because you don’t know your job, useing player like GERVINHO CHAMARKH RAMSEY he dose not work, we don’t need them, we fans need top top player, he dose not matter how much his going to cost, arsenal have the money

  2. Owolabi says:

Arsenal should seek arsene wenger, wil dnt need him anymore.

  3. Fidelis oviemuno says:

Wenger should leave Arsenal because his is given people heart attack with his subsequent loosing.

  4. Olu-philip says:

Before I could watching Arsenal’s game again is either good players come in or Wenger take his leave. I’m sick and tired of His system because he’s not a man that want to wake up to the reality.

  5. Thierry says:

Victim of his own philosophy and stubborness..AW will see out his contract..the moment they are out of CL that’s the dooms day and time for wave of change…AW is undoubtly a legend but as time passes, system, tactic and philosophy changes…so let’s see….

  6. Mdzurmi says:

Realy if arsenal sing pep guadiola as their coach thy ll win cl nex season

  7. OLAYIWOLA BUNMI JOSHUA says:

Am totally fed up of Arsene wenger let try Gadiola. Seven years trophy less, how did u cope with the situation? am using this opportunity to urge Arsenal boad to help us take good look on to this issue. We dont need Arsene Wenger anymore

  8. Brad says:

Tell you the truth, David, I’m kinda surprised he’s gone this long without a trophy, and yet is still the manager of Arsenal. Not a whole lot of owners put up with that when their expectations are higher than this.

  9. David Nugent says:

Yeah Brad, I’m kind of suprised he hasn’t won a trophy in so long, but the Arsenal board have to be loyal to Wenger because he is an Arsenal legend.

  10. Star says:

Arsene Wenger leave u are poor now bring in pep and ull see we’l win more

  11. Khair fortune says:

arsen wenger is a nice coach, but the thing is that arsenal club board want money not trophies. arsene make the legends like cesc fabregas, song, van persie, wallcot, ashley young and more but then the club sell them so there is no fault of arsen wenger.

  12. Abdurahman jumale says:

Thx. Aw he is good skill manager. Arsenal its only team EPL. Have soccer skill but long time with out trophy arsenal dosnt deserve. So this is time change needed arsenal different idea.

  13. phiaklang says:

Its hard to imagine Arsenal without Arsene Wenger. I grew up watching him as Arsenal boss.. He nurtured the greats like Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Adebayor & RV persie etc…Who knows, they wouldn’t have been what they are now had they not joined Arsenal..? He don’t buy expensive players, he buys quality players.. I think the fans should keep faith in him and let him lead the club to glories again

  14. Ateker says:

Just like u said Wenger is stubborn!! He is not leaving anytime, but probably what can save Arsenal is just to hit the market n fish well!!

  15. Kelvin blinks says:

To start with Arsene wenger is a good coach but is style of football doesn’t fit in the kind of players arsenal have so it is either he leaves the club or he make good signing.

  16. Premium30 says:

Arrogant , egoistic and down right money maker. That is the reason why the board is still on his side, so they can make money by buying youngters and selling them at a higher price after 3 or 4 seasons and AW is getting a big cut on all these monies unspent!!!! So the team came from invincibles to trash in 7 years…… whereas SAF at ManU would just go on building and rebuilding the team….. whereas we have a manger who says he will only buy players if they are excellent…..you fool ….. just look at the pool of players we have at the moment and be sure that there are hundreds of players better than the Squillacis, Chamakhs, Diabys(injured most of his life), Djourous ( when is he ever going to play), Arshavin( lazy as a pig), Ramsey ( does he ever know what he is doing), Walcott (overuns the ball mostly), Rusedski(past his time), Jenkinson (c0nfused most of the time), Santos (hahahaha), Gervinho( cannot even score from 2 meters out),Coquelin and FRimpongs(??????). Maybe they should recall the players on loan like Bendtner, Park and Denilson…. these are the great players we have and compare them to the hundreds whom AW thinks are not worthy of this team..??????? What a joke!!!

  17. Arsene Wenger is both a good economics man and a football coach, but he and the board are so much into making money. As a soccer and arsenal fan,i would like to see my team win trophies.

  18. Kevin Kuranyi says:

He should sign Kevin Kuranyi. That’ll bring the goals flooding in

  19. John Gee says:

I have never read so much ignorant rubbish. Arsene Wener is one of the best manager/coaches in the worl. Who else could do his job?? Do you not understand that a player costing £30m would cost a salary of £7/8m per year for 5years, i.e £70m and have very little ell on value by that time. Arsenal are not Man City, ManU or Chelsea with unlimited reources and huge debts. Despite that Arsenal are not far off . Remember RVP was injured for most of his career at Arsenal. Maybe Diaby will be the same.

  20. Stan says:

Wenger is a good coach, he must stop his silly experiments of getting cheap and pathetic players and trying to build them. Giroud has not shown his worth, Santi is the only player worth my praise. Chamarkh should have been sold in 2011.Our defense is a mess…the whole lot must be replaced. He must aim at Michu-like players; well established and ready to deliver.

  21. Aj says:

Pep guardiola openly stated he would like to manage arsenal and also sepeately said he would like to manage again in summer. Arsenal will not sack winger mid season out of respect. (Fools). My tip is for pep to take over arsenal in the summer!!!!

  22. goonerboy says:

Battering a small number of very poor sides cannot hide the fact that the Arsenal record against the top 3 teams is simply not good enough- one point out of 5 league games- that will be 6 when United visit.
This is not a one off- we have only beaten United twice in the last 10 attempts.
Lack of defensive capability throughout the side coupled with poor organisation has undermined the confidence of the squad. Wenger has had years to address this weakness and has no answer.
Excuses made about lack of money are just that -excuses. Wenger has consistently not tried to spend the money he has had available.

  23. asraful says:

Arsenal boss should leave the club maneger post imideatly.

  24. gooner says:

most of these people who self claimed as arsenal fans are full of shit.
they support the club only when they win and smash it to the ground when lose.pathetic
all you can say are “aw buy this player!,aw buy those player!” who the f you are? are you better than aw?
oh i know, you play some soccer manager game and you think you already know everything about soccer.
just go back to your home and breasting from your mommy bcos we don’t need your noisy mouth baby crying.

  25. Rasczerck Sheu says:

Wenger is not faulty at all, infact he is magnificient & i commend his effort, if the fans are blamming the coach what about the BOARD MEMBER? They are the source of arsenal trophyless season so far, they are transacting business with the aim of making profit rather than trothy. before arsenal can win trophy the board member must change their aims & objectives towards the team.

  26. Emmanuel says:

Is everton, totteham, swansea etc richer than arsenal?what is Diaby, ramsey, arshavin, vameleen, jerkinson doing in a club that should be ueropean champion?i think arsene wenger is just confused
