Former Leeds and Liverpool player Kewell joins Galatasaray

BBC Sport reports that Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has signed a two-year contract with Turkish champions Galatasaray.

The 29 year old Australian has been available on a free transfer since he was released by Liverpool in May after five injury-plagued seasons.

Kewell joined Liverpool from Leeds and had been linked with a move to AS Roma, Spartak Moscow and Portsmouth. His move has reportedly sparked an outrage with Leeds fans because Kewell was sent off playing for Leeds against Galatasaray in the 2000 UEFA Cup semi-final. Ironically, he was welcomed by throngs of supporters upon his arrival in Istanbul and said he was excited to have joined a club with such a large fan base.

“You could say it’s a new chapter,” Kewell said “I know that fans are passionate about sport and I love that,”

“I can’t wait to get more of it.”

“I wanted to move on and this is the best way. I can’t wait to get started; it’s just what I’m looking forward to, a new challenge.”

Kewell being sent off against Galatasary is not the issue with us, the Leeds fans. Kewell was a member of the team that played against them in Turkey during that ill-fated UEFA Cup night when two of our fans were tragically stabbed to death, and many more were seriously injured by the murderous actions of Galatasary supporters. The levels of violence in and around their stadium is beyond comparison with anywhere else in the world. Even the players have to come out of the tunnel protected by riot police shields, to save them from the bombardment of missiles that are hurled in their direction. Many, many players and officials have been physically assaulted on the field of play by Galatasary’s moroninc following. For Kewell to now willingly embrace and commend this band of thugs is beyond the comprehension of all Leeds supporters.

Look, manhood, whatever had occurred and however much the Leeds fans had “lost control” does not warrant Galatasaray fans to then murder 2 Leeds fans. The behaviour of your fans has now diminished all opinions of Turkey as a country, never mind just the club.
I’m sure i speak on behalf of all Leeds fans, rot in hell.
