Klinsmann snubs Donovan in US squad

United States’ all-time leading goalscorer Landon Donovan was left out of Jurgen Klinsmann’s latest national team training squad.

Klinsmann’s Donovan snub leaves the former Evertonian in major doubt to be included in the squad that faces Honduras when the final round of World Cup qualifying on February 6.

“Landon has not been invited, because, obviously, he is taking his break. He is thinking about his future,” Klinsmann told Fox Soccer on Sunday.

“We stayed in touch after the MLS Cup final, and he’s not at a point yet where he knows what he wants to do.”

For months, Donovan has expressed his uncertainty over his playing future, and after he helped lead the LA Galaxy to their second consecutive MLS Cup championship, he was adamant about the need for time off to contemplate what he wanted to do.

With that process ongoing, Klinsmann had no option but to omit Donovan and prepare for future games without him.

Of the 25 players called into his January training camp, Klinsmann included five forwards and five midfielders who can play on the wings, the positions where Donovan would play.

“We are as curious as anybody else what his decision will be in the future time, but right now he is not part of the camp,” Klinsmann said.
