Lambert wants highest possible league finish
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert wants a win against Wigan on Sunday to finish as high up the table as possible.
Villa are already guaranteed Premier League football next season but Lambert has set his sights on a strong finish to a campaign that had for so long threatened to end in disaster.
A run of just two defeats in six matches – against Chelsea and Manchester United – has led them to the safety of 16th but they could still finish as high as 11th.
“Anyone looking at our football, we never looked like a team that were panicking and launching the ball into the penalty box and hoping for the best,” he told the club’s official website.
“We played some unbelievable football in games. The lads have been a credit to the club, the way they have turned it around.
“We want to try and get up that table as best we can. We have an opportunity to win a game of football and try to jump a few places.”
Lambert also said his side will be going all out against Wigan to secure the three points, for the sake of their travelling fans.
“We won’t go up there thinking the whole thing is done and dusted. We have 4,000 people coming to watch us,” he said.
“We want to finish as high as we can. Whether it happens you don’t know.
“But we have an opportunity to jump a few places.
“I’m never one to just rest and think ‘job done.’ You have to look forward. Sunday is a game to try and win.”
