Liverpool chasing Hoffenheim star

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he would be keen to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim.

Sigurdsson looked close to signing a deal with Rodgers’ former employers Swansea where he had agreed terms.

However, the 39-year-old spoke of his intention to sign the midfielder who performed so well for him last campaign: “If he [Sigurdsson] comes onto the market, I have to be interested,” he told Sky Sports.

Rodgers will allow Sigurdsson to speak to Swansea first but if the chance becomes available, he will try to bring him to Merseyside.

Liverpool are sure to be busy in this summer’s transfer market but it is two players who already contracted to the club that are taking the headlines at the moment.

Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani both spent loan spells abroad last season and had looked to be on their way out of Anfield but the new boss has expressed his desire to try and keep them in Merseyside.

“They’re certainly talented players,” Rodgers said. He will know Joe Cole from his time at Chelsea earlier in his career too of course.

If these two players were to come back and impress next season, it would be like two new signings for Liverpool.

It is certainly an exciting new era for the club and one which has already begun with plenty of transfer speculation.
