The win moves the Galaxy seven points clear of Chivas in fifth after a three-game undefeated run.
Dallas piled on five unanswered goals against the Portland Timbers in their battle of the Western Conference’s bottom two.
Hanyer Mosquera scored an own goal and Andrew Jacobson, Jackson Goncalves, Scott Sealy and Ruben Luna were on target for Dallas to hand the bottom-placed Timbers a fourth consecutive loss.
Real Salt Lake atoned for their 5-0 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes with a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids.
The win moves Salt Lake within four points of the Western Conference-leading Earthquakes, who are not in action until Sunday.
Houston Dynamo won their third straight game with a 3-0 defeat of Montreal Impact to move up to third in the Eastern Conference.
Macoumba Kandji scored twice, either side of Robert Boswell’s strike in the 84th minute, with his second coming a minute from time.
Chris Birchall scored the only goal, a minute after half-time, in Columbus Crew’s 1-0 win over DC United.
