Newcastle in talks for Abdennour

Premier League strugglers Newcastle are stepping up their efforts to sign Tunisian defender Aymen Abdennour from Monaco, Le 10 Sport has learned.

The Magpies have all but agreed a transfer fee with the Ligue 1 side, but they are waiting to hear whether the centre-back is interested in moving to St James’ Park.

Abdennour has been linked with Tottenham, AC Milan and Juventus this season, but Newcastle were the first side to make concrete move.

The 25-year-old will probably delay his answer for a couple of weeks to see whether some of his suitors will step up their interest, even if the Magpies are eager to wrap up the deal as soon as possible.

Aymen Abdennour joined Monaco from Toulouse in January 2014, initially on a six-month loan, before the Principality club purchased his contract last summer.

The Tunisian has impressed playing for the club in Ligue 1 and Champions League this season and chances are he will be leaving for greener pastures in the summer.
