Pastore targets top spot

Paris Saint-Germain forward Javier Pastore is targeting top spot in Group F of the UEFA Champions League after his side’s win on Wednesday.

PSG sealed their spot in the competition’s last 16 with a 1-0 home win over APOEL.

Edinson Cavani’s goal after 54 seconds proved decisive in Paris and the Ligue 1 champions lead the group on 10 points.

Laurent Blanc’s men are one point ahead of Barcelona, who they face in Spain in the final round of group clashes on December 10.

“It’s good to be through,” said Pastore.

“The first place is now at stake in Barcelona. Hopefully we can win over there.”

Wednesday’s scoreline was not representative of PSG’s dominance against a side who have claimed just one point from their four group games.

The French team had 68 per cent of the possession and spurned a number of good opportunities to make the closing stages of the game more comfortable for themselves.

PSG, who are second in Ligue 1, now turn their attention back to domestic matters, specifically Sunday’s top-of-the-table home clash with leaders Marseille.

PSG defender Thiago Silva said: “We produced a good game against a team who tried to keep it tight. It was hard to find space.

“We still have many things to improve. Now we rest ahead of another tough game.”
