Universitario drew level with Peru Primera Division leaders Sporting Cristal on 30 points after the weekend’s action.
A 2-0 victory over Universidad San Martin saw Universitario join Sporting at the helm, although they still have a 10-goal inferior differential which leaves them in second spot.
Sporting gave up two leads – including one late – to draw 2-2 with Sport Huancayo at home.
The leaders were ahead courtesy of a fifth-minute penalty to Renzo Sheput, but Huancayo were level from the spot five minutes later when Ryan Salazar converted a spot kick.
Sheput scored from free play on 31 minutes to give Sporting a 2-1 lead, but Kleyr equalised at the death.
The two sides are three points clear of Real Garcilaso in third – but the latter have three games in hand to make up the difference.
Sitting in fourth are Alianza Lima, who accounted for Pacifico 2-1 away from home and have played four more fixtures than Garcilaso.
The capital club won despite losing Edson Uribe to a 66th-minute red card with the score at 1-1, only for Lima’s Johnny Vidales netting the winner five minutes later.
Melgar climbed above Juan Aurich with a 2-0 victory over their mid-table rivals.
Union Comercio led early against Cesar Vallejo but could only record a 1-1 draw at home.
UTC Cajamarca climbed up the table to 11th with a 2-1 victory over Leon de Huanuco, while Inti Gas defeated Jose Galvez 2-0 to go fifth on 26 points.
