This site has been running a poll for a while now regarding who is England’s best player. Very kindly, well over five hundred readers have registered a vote so whilst the result is not exactly scientific, we have a reasonable number of opinions to be able to make sensible deductions.
The result of the poll has been as follows:
Wayne Rooney 43%
Steve Gerrard 23%
Theo Walcott 16%
Frank Lampard 9%
Rio Ferdinand 3%
John Terry 2%
Others 3%
So what can we deduce from that? Well, we can see that Wayne Rooney has finished first quite comfortably. That surprises me somewhat as, although I probably agree with the result, Steve Gerrard has a huge number of admirers around the world.
Theo Walcott finished third which must be based pretty much on that one game in Croatia. Good though that was and exciting prospect that he is, are you really sure? England’s best player? Well, eighty-six of you think he is.
Frank Lampard maintains some support but he is well down the list. A similar poll two years ago would have seen him get a much higher number of votes. He is in great form for Chelsea and he could still get back to somewhere near the top of the list.
Rio Ferdinand beats John Terry. I know it was only by two votes but I’m really pleased by that. I have always thought that Rio was the better player and have been shouted down on more than one occasion by very vociferous Terry fans.
Eighteen people voted for players other than the six listed. Your guess as to who they voted for is as good as mine!
So there we have it. Wayne Rooney is England’s best player according to Soccernews readers. Good choice that is. The site is happy to associate itself with the result!

Got something to say?

Rooney may be at the top of the vote, but Gerrard is the best English player at the moment.
Steven Gerrard is the best player england has at present. Some might say it is rooney while some might say it is lampard because of their present form. But the fact remains that in terms of all round achievement, Gerrrrrrraard is still the best and will remain the best.
Although people are a little bit doubting the fact that Gerrard is better Of than lampard i will like to say that Gerrard is better num 1 point is that Gerrard shoots with both foots two as a captain he is inspirative three he scores nice goals
go steve go
Wayne rooney is the player for the moment but not later on
Am in love wt blues,am real madrild fans but english futboll is fantastic now.chlease need to walk hard to achive there aims.
No doubt, Rio is a good player likewise Terry, Roony and Wallcott is also good to earn a praise, GERRARD is a player every coaches will pray to have in his team, he is a better player but sentiment apart, when we talk of what to offer a team, FRANK JAMES LAMPARD is arguably the best England player i’ve seen
I’ m a real madrid fan bt i’m in luv wit d perfomance of AC MILAN despite d are not in d champion league. Must especially my best player Ronaldinho
Hey C’mon Nobodys talking about AC Milan. And, who’s the best english player? The poll got it right. Its Wayne Rooney. You’re wrong if you think Gerrard is the best english player. Gerrard, however, is a fantastic player. He can score goals, pass the ball, and on top of all this, he is an inspirational leader in the pitch. But you just can’t write off Rooney. He has an excellent finishing touch, blistering pace, strong physically and technically gifted. On top of that, he is a potential captain of the future. Sir Alex and Fabio Capello would definitely agree.
I wouldn’t want ronaldo as a captain
Cristiano Ronaldo Is the best preamiership player
first of all england doesn’t have naturally talented players so u’ve 2 take de bst out of the mediocre 2 poor plyers only gerrad, lampard, rooney, rio wld come out tops bt i believe stevie g is the best. bt admitt england doesn’t knoe how 2 ply soccer as far as de national team despite all de resources
