Lars Bender insisted he had no issue being deployed at right-back during Germany’s 2-1 victory over Denmark on Sunday.

The Bayer Leverkusen ace is a midfielder by trade but was used in defence against the Danes and as well as looking defensively sound, the 23-year-old popped up with the winning goal.

Bender, who featured as a substitute in his country’s previous two Group B outings against Portugal and the Netherlands, revealed Joachim Loew’s decision to switch him to right-back had not come as a complete surprise.

“That is not my position but I played there during the entire build-up,” the former 1860 Munich man told ARD.

“I should be humble. What is important is the team and that we continue to be successful. We have a positive spirit in our team.

“Apart from the goal, starting my first game [at the Euros] was something special. But I am happy I could score. That is, of course, a nice present.”

Having topped Group B with a 100 percent winning record, Germany will now take on Greece in the last eight.
