French striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle will not play again this season due to “family problems”, his Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon announced on Thursday.

“Due to known factors and his psychological state, Sporting believes that the player will not play again this season,” the club said in a statement.

Local media reported that one of Sinama-Pongolle’s daughters had fallen into a coma after an accident in France.

“Taking into account the details of the family problems with which he is faced, Sporting understands and accepts that the player will have to be absent for short periods,” the club added.

Former Liverpool striker Sinama-Pongolle, 25, joined Sporting from Atletico Madrid for 6.5 million euros in January.

He has since played six league games, scoring one goal.
