Southampton reject Liverpool approach for Long

The Mirror understands that Southampton have turned down an approach from Liverpool for Shane Long.

The South Coast side secured a deal for Charlie Austin from Queens Park Rangers over the weekend, but have no intentions of parting company with Long, who has scored five goals in fourteen Premier League appearances so far this season – as many has he managed in the entire 2014/15 campaign.

Liverpool have taken four players from the Saints in recent years, with Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert all swapping St Mary’s for Anfield.

The Merseyside outfit are on the lookout for a new forward with Daniel Sturridge continuing to struggle with his fitness, Danny Ings out for the season and Christian Benteke failing to show the consistency he did at Aston Villa.

Whilst they are keen to keep hold of Long, Southampton could be set to sell Graziano Pelle, who is wanted by Juventus.
