Wigan hopeful of landing Powell

Wigan Athletic are lining up a loan move for Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell, the Mirror understands.

Latics’ boss Owen Coyle tried to sign the former Crewe Alexandra man while in charge of Bolton Wanderers, and is keen to have him on board for the FA Cup winners’ promotion push this term.

The 19 year old played just thirty minutes of Premier League football last season over two substitute appearances, scoring in the first of those – against Wigan last September.

His only starts for the club came in Europe, and Coyle is tasked with trying to persuade the teenager to swap the Champions League for the Championship.

Watford and Middlesbrough are also interested in the England under 17 international, but he has told friends that he favours a move to the DW Stadium.

Wigan have also been linked with a move for United defender Michael Keane, who’s only appearances for the club have come in the League Cup.
