With Manchester City’s Champions League success last weekend officially drawing in the summer break, all of the attention will now fall on the 2023 Ballon d’Or and an all-star crew who are looking to lift football’s most iconic individual award.

While the likes of Kylian Mbappe and reigning champion Karim Benzema might be included in the Ballon d’Or’s superstar shortlist, it appears that we face a two-horse race to claim this year’s award.

Although the annual ceremony pencilled in to take place on October 30th, it is Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi who are comfortably tipped as the runaway contenders this year.

Both enjoying their own respective history-making campaigns this season, the two modern-day icons have both staked their claim over the past six months.

In what promises to be the most unique Ballon d’Or in history, we have taken an in-depth look at all the latest betting odds and a glance at the two iconic contenders.

Lionel Messi – PSG/Inter Miami

Although last year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony might have been the first time since 2006 that Lionel Messi had not at least clinched a bronze medal finish, it is no secret that the 35-year-old legend is tipped as a standout contender to get his hands on an eighth award.

Becoming the first Aragonite player since Diego Maradona in 1980 to guide the South American icons to World Cup glory, 2023 will be remembered as the year that Messi cemented his spot as the greatest player of all-time.

While the footballing world might have been stunned last week as the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will be heading to MLS outfit Inter Miami in what is a history-making switch to the States, Messi leaves Europe still at the peak of his powers.

Notching 16 Ligue 1 strikes this season as he helped PSG clinch back-to-back domestic crowns, the ex-Barcelona trailblazer has already been rewarded for his heroic performances.

Priced at 8/15 with Vegas Land to lift an historic eighth Ballon d’Or award in October, Messi was named the FIFA Men’s Best Player of 2022 earlier in the year.

  • French Ligue 1 winner

Erling Haaland – Manchester City

While it might be Messi who currently stands as an odds on favourite to claim an eighth Ballon d’Or crown this season, Erling Haaland has certainly staked his own claim to lift the most sort after individual accolade in world football.

Although the Norwegian phenomenon might have only made his Premier League debut this season, the former Borussia Dortmund striker has only continued to shatter a string of long-standing records.

Already cementing his spot as one of the most clinical marksmen of his generation, Haaland stole all of the headlines as Manchester City became the first English club since 1999 to be crowned treble champions.

Along with notching 36 Premier League strikes this season – the most goals by a player in a single top-flight campaign – Haaland has already been bagged the Football Writers Award and been named the Premier League Player of the Season.

Likewise, getting his hands on a maiden Champions League Golden Boot after grabbing 12 European goals in his 11 appearances, many will feel that the 22-year-old is unfairly priced at 11/8 with Pribet.
