Former PSV coach Dick Advocaat has lauded Kevin Strootman, suggesting the midfielder could easily make the grade at Liverpool or Tottenham.

The 23-year-old made 34 appearances for PSV last season, scoring eight goals to help the Philips Stadion outfit to second place in the Eredivisie.

And Advocaat, who announced his retirement at the end of the campaign, believes Strootman could emulate Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry.

“(He would be good for) Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but I think he’s also good enough for Manchester City and Manchester United,” Advocaat told De Telegraaf.

“Strootman is nothing less than Gareth Barry. He’s a very useful player for every team. Especially when he’s surrounded by better players.”

The former Rangers boss, who will be succeeded at the helm by Philip Cocu, also hinted that Strootman requires a move to continue his development.

“For PSV it would be good if he stays, but for Strootman himself it’s better to leave,” he added.

“He’s the reserve captain of the Dutch national squad and PSV will make another step next season. This guy fits everywhere. He’s a fantastic player because he knows exactly what his qualities are.”
