Ajax reduced the gap with second-placed FC Twente to just one point with five games to go, while Feyenoord suffered a painful defeat at FC Volendam.

Uruguayan Luis Suarez put Ajax ahead after less than two minutes at Roda JC, and Ismael Aissati doubled the away side’s advantage in the 66th. Sekou Cisse got one back for the hosts six minutes later.

The match was ended early as home fans began throwing seats onto the pitch to protest the probable merger of Roda JC with first division side Fortuna Sittard.

Feyenoord had a chance to move into ninth place but the Rotterdam outfit gave away a lead to lose 2-1 at Volendam.

Roy Makaay had put the visitors ahead on ten minutes but two second-half goals from Dominique van Dijk turned things around in Volendam’s favor.
