Ajax will be without Kolbeinn Sigthorsson for the remainder of 2011 after it was revealed the Icelandic striker has a fractured ankle.

The young attacker was forced to leave the pitch in the Eredivisie champions’ 1-0 defeat away against Groningen last Sunday after sustaining a knock to the ankle and was initially thought to be sidelined for two to three weeks.

However, a statement on the Amsterdam giants’ official website reads that the knock is actually more serious, with the 21-year-old now unable to feature again until the new year.

“Kolbeinn Sigthorsson will be out of action until the winter break. A scan on his injured ankle has revealed a stress fracture,” the statement reads.

Sigthorsson joined Ajax from AZ in the summer transfer window and has immediately become a key player at the Eredivisie champions.

The striker has scored five goals in eight league appearances so far this season.
