Valencia wing-back Jordi Alba is nearing a contract extension with the La Liga club, according to a report.

The versatile left-back, who can also play a more attacking winger position, is highly rated by the Mestalla outfit, and they are hoping to keep him beyond his contract – due to expire in 2013 – to keep him away from Barcelona, who are reportedly interested in the 22-year-old.

Alba – a client of agency InterStar Deporte – met with the club on Tuesday to discuss a deal which would see him remain at the club until 2015, and a representative of the player said the discussions were productive.

“We are making progress. Talks are heading in the right direction,” an InterStar Deporte spokesperson told Superdeporte.

The Spain international is believed to be content with the length of the deal, with the proposed wages still being negotiated.
