Serbia came to Lisbon to face Portugal in the final round of the World Cup qualifications Group A needing to win to finish top of the table and secure a place at the tournament in Qatar.

Few believed it possible, especially after Nemanja Gudelj’s mistake, capitalized on by Renato Sanches, provided the hosts with an early lead. However, a deflected Dusan Tadic shot just after the half-hour mark gave a bit of hope to Dragan Stojkovic’s team, and eventually, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Serbia’s all-time record goalscorer, conjured up a last-minute miracle to leave five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in tears.
