An Anfield Rebuild: Who are the European superstars that could be on their way to Liverpool this summer?

While Liverpool might have signed off the 2022/23 campaign with an eye-catching flurry, it is no secret that Jurgen Klopp’s squad endured a rather public Premier League nightmare last season.

Eventually missing out on a crucial Champions League ticket and finishing four points adrift of clinching a top-four finish, many feel that the English giants are in need of a rebuild this summer.

Watching the likes of veteran midfielder James Milner make the move away from Merseyside after his contract expired on June 30th, Liverpool could be set for an action-packed couple of months behind the scenes at Anfield.

While Klopp’s side might be relieved by the fact that attacking icon Mohamed Salah will be staying put for the 2023/24 campaign, we have taken a look at three European superstars that have been linked with a Premier League switch this summer.

Dominik Szoboszlai – RB Leipzig

In what looks set to be a blockbuster deal that could be announced as early as this weekend, Liverpool appear to have won the race for RB Leipzig ace Dominik Szoboszlai.

While the 22-year-old might have attracted interest from the likes of Premier League rivals Newcastle, Sky Sports announced on Friday evening that Klopp’s side have reached an agreement with Leipzig to trigger Szoboszlai’s £60million release clause.

Personal terms were discussed with the midfielder’s representatives at the start of the week and were never considered to be an issue.

Producing 14 Bundesliga goal contributions and regarded to be among Europe’s most sort after young starlets, the Hungarian international has also gained a reputation for his versatility in playing across the midfield.

With Szoboszlai himself making it clear that he is desperate to complete an Anfield switch this summer, the 22-year-old’s profile is certainly similar to what Klopp looks for in new recruits.

Nicolo Barella – Inter Milan

After publicly missing out in their pursuit of Jude Bellingham this summer, it is no secret that Klopp has a new central midfielder at the very top of his summer wishlist.

While Newcastle might have fallen short in their blockbuster pursuit of Nicolo Barella last month, Liverpool remain heavily interested in the Italian international and La Gazzetta della Sport reported over the weekend that the Reds have already begun tentative discussions with Inter Milan.

However, while the San Siro hierarchy might have made it clear that they have no intention of selling their midfield talisman this summer, the Nerazzurri are still dealing with some financial issues behind the scenes.

Amidst real interest from the likes of Spanish giants Barcelona, reports from Italy have suggested that Inter values the 26-year-old at more than £60million.

While Liverpool might know the challenges of completing a swoop for Barella this summer, Klopp has made it clear that the 45-cap international is a top target during the transfer window.

Romeo Lavia – Southampton

While Southampton might have endured an infamous Premier League nightmare last season as they lost their top-flight status with a whimper, Romeo Lavia certainly finds his stock at a red-hot high following a breakout campaign at St. Mary’s.

Making the move from Manchester City’s youth ranks ahead of the 2022/23 campaign after finding first-team chances hard to come by at the Etihad, the 19-year-old was certainly the Saints’ standout performer last season.

Making 34 Premier League appearances and also receiving a full call-up from Belgium, the ex-City starlet appears destined for a move away from the south coast.

However, although Liverpool might have been monitoring Lavia and his situation since returning from the World Cup’s winter break, Klopp’s side look set to face some real competition.

Although Arsenal might be inching closer toward a club-record deal for West Ham skipper Declan Rice, Football Transfers reported over the weekend that the Gunners are also keen on snapping up Lavia this summer.
