Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille OSC, according to The Times.
The 22-year-old centre-back has been an object of interest from a number of clubs around Europe, with Napoli, Everton, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain being mentioned the most in recent reports. However, Arsenal have apparently won the race for his signature and are now close to completing a deal.
Apart from signing winger Willian from Chelsea on a free transfer, the Gunners have shown with the permanent acquisitions of centre-back Pablo Mari and right-back Cedric Soares that their transfer priority this summer lies in restructuring of the defence. They also have William Saliba now as an option in the heart of the back line, following the 19-year-old’s season-long loan at former club Saint-Etienne.
Arsenal have a good working relationship with Lille after their purchase of winger Nicolas Pepe for £72 million last summer. Gabriel made 23 competitive appearances for the Ligue 1 side in 2019/20, and is now expected to bring his composure, which often belies his age, to the Emirates.
