Fabian Rieder’s stoppage-time spot-kick condemned Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga defeat in almost three months as Augsburg triumphed 2-1.
Leverkusen knew a victory on Saturday would take them, at least temporarily, to within a point of the Champions League places.
But despite taking the lead and creating chances worth 3.36 expected goals (xG), Kasper Hjulmand’s team were undone in the 97th minute when Rider coolly slotted home from 12 yards out.
Patrik Schick’s fantastic header saw Leverkusen take a 12th-minute lead, yet Rieder swiftly equalised with a strike from the edge of the area after the hosts failed to clear their lines from a corner.
Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen pulled off some superb stops to keep Leverkusen at bay, making nine saves in total, though Mark Flekken also had to be on point at the other end to deny Augsburg a breakaway second.
However, with the match ebbing towards what would have been a frustrating draw for Leverkusen, Montrell Culbreath felled Uchenna Ogundu, and Rieder duly completed his double by sending Flekken the wrong way.

Data Debrief: Profligate finishing proves costly
Hjulmand has often bemoaned his team’s finishing this season, and it was the same old story as Leverkusen finished with 35 shots, getting 10 of those on target, but they found Dahmen in inspired form.
Leverkusen had a whopping 61 touches in Augsburg’s area, and 78 final-third entries, yet it was the visitors who showed more composure in front of goal.
This ended a seven-game unbeaten run in the league for Leverkusen, who sit sixth.
